Wart: A hard, rough lump that grows on the skin and is caused by infection with certain viruses
Technically known as verruca vulgaris, warts occur most often on the face, hands, arms, legs and feet, but can grow anywhere on your body. Contrary to popular belief, warts do not have "roots". Instead, they grow only in the top layer of skin, the epidermis. When they grow down, they displace the second layer of skin, the dermis, but do not grow into it.

Causes of warts
Warts are a type of infection caused by the human papillomavirus virus (HPV). The virus infects the outer layer of skin and causes the skin cells to grow quickly.
