Bala - Organic, 1 lb , (Banyan Botanicals)
Literally meaning "strength," it is a rejuvenative and aphrodisiac that strengthens all tissues and is especially useful for the heart, lungs and the nervous system. Since April 12, 2004 herbs containing ephedrine alkaloids have been prohibited by the FDA for use in dietary supplements. The final rule states that it "does not affect the use of Ephedra preparations in traditional Asian medicine." Bala is an entirely different species of plant than Ephedra, but it does contain a relatively small amount of ephedrine alkaloids as do several other plants. - Used externally as an oil to support muscle health and comfort*

Because of the way the final rule is written, it is currently unclear how bala may be used by practitioners of Ayurveda. As a result, Banyan does not market Bala as a dietary supplement. We do make it available as a bulk powder to Ayurvedic practitioners for traditional use in external preparations.

DR. CLAUDIA WELCH
 Claudia Welch is a Doctor of Oriental Medicine and a practitioner of Ayurvedic medicine. She began her study of Ayurveda in 1987 under the supervision of her mentor, Dr. Robert Svoboda. She lived in India for three years, where she studied Ayurveda, Sanskrit and related subjects. Dr. Welch worked at the Ayurvedic Institute in Albuquerque, NM with her teacher, Dr. Vasant Lad, for seven years. She has completed Hart de Fouw's Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced Jyotish workshops. She received her Master's Degree in Oriental Medicine from Southwest Acupuncture College in 1997.
Dr. Welch is a faculty member at The Ayurvedic Institute, Southwest Acupuncture College and at Acupractice Seminars in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Dr. Welch has lectured on Oriental and Ayurvedic medicines internationally. She has a private practice in Albuquerque.

Ashwagandha is the Sanskrit name for Winter Cherry. It can be translated as "scent of a horse" for its characteristic odor. The name also alludes to its reputation in Ayurveda for bestowing the vitality and strength of a horse.
